Dimitry Gerrman was born and spent his
childhood in Belorussia, in the city of Gomel. He began to sculpt at an
early age of seven. At the age of fifteen he came to the capital of
Berlorussia, Mink, where he became a student at the Glebov Art College.
His early work was inspired by the old masters and later on Rodin,
Bourdelle and Maillol became of most influence. He graduated in 1974
with honors and in 1978 completed his first commission, monumental
relief dedicated to the Russian Revolution on a public building in
Gomel. In 1989 he decided to immigrate to the United
States and in January 1990 arrived in Baltimore, Maryland. Shortly after
his arrival, he began to create his work for private collectors and
exhibit his work throughout the country. In 1993 he was commissioned to
create a Lester Levy Humanitarian Award of which US Senator Barbara
Mikulski became the first recipient and in 1994 his sculpture ‘Crying
Violin’ became international Ellie Wiesel Holocaust remembrance Award
which was presented to Steven Spielberg for his movie Schindler’s
List. In 1996 he became a member of the National
Sculpture Society. His work can be found in Museums, and public places
such as the State Russian Museum, United States Senate in Washington,
Zimmerli Art Museum in Rutgers University, Shaare Zedek Medical Center
in Jerusalem, Alex Raydon Foundation in New York, Kolodzei Art
Foundation, USA. Private collections around the world include USA, England, France, Russia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Brazil, Venezuela, Switzerland and Germany. |
